A Story To Be Told - How Reuse and Ecological Thinking Created a New Product

by Tove Madsen

I admit, my first thought was, this is crazy but good, I have to meet with these people!

This is the story of a group of entrepreneurs that got an idea, tried it out and now are launching a brand new thinking 2016 with old and natural ingredients. I belive the world needs more of this kind of ecological thinking, to warm and surprise our friends and family. Here is the story behind a narural and ecologic fire starter (braständare) KOTTEN.

Kotten - The Story

It all started somewhere in northern Sweden when Robert Kraft was spending time at his in-laws' outhouse reading "the housewife's tip of the week" in a magazine. The tip was to collect pine cones and turn them into fire starters by dipping them in melted candle wax.

Robert tried but realized that the pine cones didn't burn well enough to light fires efficiently. Since Robert has a curious mind he decided to do a lot of experimenting. After several trials and errors, he found the perfect recipe that turns the pine cones into excellent fire starters.

Robert also realized he would not have to collect the pine cones himself since the forest industry already harvests millions of pine cones each year to get the seeds in order to grow new trees. Pine cones that would normally go to waste are now converted into natural and high efficient fire starters.

The Sustainable Fire Starter

These pine cones are harvested in Swedish forests. Every batch of pine cones can be traced back to the originating forest. The pine cones are processed in Höga Kusten, Sweden to release their seeds - seeds that become new trees. After the seeds have been removed, the pine cones become a waste product and thrown away. Those pine cones are now recycled by Kotten and turned into natural and highly efficient fire starters.

The candle wax comes from a candle factory in Hälsingland, Sweden where they make eco labled candles. During the manufacturing process, some candles become malformed and used to be thrown away. That candel wax is now recycled by Kotten.

The package is designed, manufactured and assembled in Sweden. Some of the packages are assembled by Scouts and Kotten makes a financial tribute to the Scout movement.

The leather handle on the box comes from recycled furniture. Out of one worn-out leather sofa; 17,000 handles are made!

What Makes Men Love the Kitchen

by Tove Madsen

I do not think it is only the rational reason that you are hungry or have to feed your family that makes men use the kitchen. I can see in our kitchen that one particular thing makes the difference in frequency of cooking or baking.

In fact, it works on women too.

A new cool gadget is the “thing”! It does not have to be expensive, but it often is when it comes to men. I have seen it.

Professional is another part of making it happen more often. If men can do it as the Pros do it, then it is cool and an ocean of time can be spent on this new hot thing with absolute focus.

I think I am somewhat close to this behaviour myself but not nearly as much money as he spent on his last kitchen asset. I have found myself do oven baked vegetables, fish in the oven, and baking cakes and bread as never before. The family is very happy. Food is good if I may say myself, and healthy, no gluten and white sugar. No extra fat or oil is needed as either.

Would you like to know what caught my attention?

It is an Oven Liner, Non-Stick and Reusable for Professional Cooking and Baking!

I have used the ones made of paper earlier, but apparently they are not reusable and, therefore, someone has to remember to buy new ones. That was not always the case in our house.

I understand that the professionals love the ease of use, nothing sticks and you wipe off grease easily. You are quickly set for next tray of bread or cookies. I have even cut my first oven liner in pieces to fit my favourite oven dish and it makes a difference in good results and easy cleaning.

I actually got so caught by the thing that I started to sell it on amazon.co.uk. If you like to try the kitchen gadget; type in search “TFX oven liner” and the product is sold by Nordic Friend.
